What is a Pod Vape?

You may be asking yourself, with all these new pod devices, pod mods, pod kits, AIOs, and more, what exactly is a pod vape?Ā A pod device is a compact vape that accepts pods, coils, or integrated pods with coils. Most importantly, they have a proprietary connection.

We used to say pod devices were less than X watts; however, with the latest pod mods releasing at 80W, 90W, and some even over 100W, it's tough to go by wattage alone when determining your vape's species.

What we mean by proprietary connection is essentially an atomizer connection that isĀ anythingĀ but 510 threaded. If your vape has a 510 thread, your device would be classified as a mod. However, if your device has a magnetic or snap-in connection, we classifyĀ thatĀ as a pod device.

Different Types of Pod Devices

Now there are two significant umbrellas that pod devices fall under - devices with pre-filled pods and devices with refillable pods (some may refer to them as Open & Closed Systems).

Pre-filled pods are the easiest and simplest to understand, so let's start there. You are probably familiar with Juul and/or Vuse, the gas station kings of e-cigarettes. These devices are considered pre-filled pod devices (Closed Systems) as you purchase the device once and then replace the podsĀ afterĀ you have vaped through them. Pre-filled pods are the simplest solution to stay away from the stinkies with no maintenance or additional purchases necessary, just crack open the packaging and throw the pod into your device. However, the major drawback with pre-filled pod devices is that you are stuck toĀ ONLYĀ vaping tobacco & menthol flavors.

As of 2020, The FDA has begun cracking downĀ on the manufacturing and sale ofĀ flavoredĀ pre-filled pods. This has made it impossible to find pods with any flavoring that is NOT tobacco or menthol. While that may be a huge bummer (I know, we adults like Cotton Candy & Blue Raspberry, too), you can still experience every flavor under the sun with refillable pod devices!Ā

If you're like me and like your flavors, then refillable pods (Open Pod Vape) are your move. This is where the flood gates open with options, though - pod devices, pod mods, AIO kits, OH MY! We will get into the differences between all the pod devices shortly, but all these devices have in common is that you provide the juice and re-fill the pods yourself.Ā

Traditional Pod Devices

Let's now get into the different types of refillable pod devices and what each one accomplishes best. The first is your generic closed system pod device; this is your most common run-of-the-mill pod device. Some great examples of traditional pod kits would be theĀ Uwell Caliburn G, theĀ OXVA Xlim, and theĀ Geekvape AP2.

These pod vapes feature a pod that snaps into place or connects via magnets. What is different, however, is the coil & pod integration. With the Caliburn & XROS, the coil isĀ built intoĀ the pod, making it impossible only to change the coil. Once you have burned through your coil, it's time to replace the entire pod. The Geekvape AP2, on the other hand, allows you to replace only the coil, saving on plastic waste and allowing you the freedom to switch resistances/coils whenever you'd like! If you have a preference, take a peek at the Features & Specifications tab to verify how the vape operates.Ā

Pod Mods

Pod Mods are next, and this has been the device taking over as of late. Our definition of a pod mod is a pod device with a proprietary connection, 35W+, AND replaceable coils.

While traditional pod devices can have integrated OR independent coils, pod mods utilizeĀ onlyĀ independent coils. Pod mods fill the void of high-powered, portable devices, as now you can rip high wattageĀ from an ultra-portable vape! A few examples of pod mods would beĀ Vaporesso Gen PT60, theĀ Lost Vape Centaurus Q80, andĀ OXVA Origin 2.Ā

AIO Devices

Next, we have the new kid on the block, AIOs! While yes, AIOs have been around for years, there has been a recent resurgence thanks to the Billet Box craze. AIOs stands for All in One, which you guessed it, the device is all in one - meaning the pod is built into the device itself, and you store your juice within the confines of the device.

This can look like the aforementioned Billet Box,Ā Tony B's & Vandy Vape's Pulse AIO, or even theĀ DOVPO Abyss AIO. Usually, All-in-Ones will have a Boro Tank and/or Bridge that will house the juice and coil, respectively.Ā

Pods & Coils

Integrated Pods

Previously, we touched briefly on the different types of pods and coils, but I'd like to get a little more granular. First, let's go over integrated pods and their benefits and downsides.

An integrated pod means the coil is built into the pod itself, and these pods are perfect for those looking for as little maintenance and fuss as possible. More often than not, integrated coils will still come in many resistance options, but you will be unable to switch the coils out themselves. While this may be good for ease of use, it's not necessarily the best for the environment, and some users have reported muted flavor compared to pods with independent coils.

Additionally, we have noticed thatĀ mostlyĀ MTL (Mouth to Lung) devices feature an integrated pod - the thinking behind it is the higher the wattage, the more frequent you will have to change your coil. So lower wattage devices can get away with an integrated coil, while higher wattage devices allow you to swap the coil out when you feel fit.Ā

Replaceable Coils & Replaceable Pods

Next, let's tackle the replaceable components like coils and pods. Replaceable pods and coils give the end user the most customization possible. Both pods and coils can be replaced, but coils will need to be replaced much more frequently.

Since pods are easily washed out, you will be able to use a single pod for potentially months so long as it is clean and gunk free. Coils, on the other hand, will need to be replaced anywhere from every week (1) to every four (4) weeks. The variability in which coils need to be replaced depends on various variables.

The most significant factor is the type of juice used. For instance, if you have a 3mg fruit juice that is relatively clear and a 50mg dessert juice that is a really dark color, your coil will last exponentiallyĀ shorterĀ with the dark dessert juice. This is due to the nicotine oxidization with juice that has a high nicotine content or uses a lot of sweeteners.

This is where the term Coil Killer comes from; some juice recipes are inherently worst on coils, so be sure to consider this when selecting an ADV (All Day Vape) juice and device.Ā

Pod Tanks

Lastly to finish off the pods section we have pod tanks. Pod tanks are a cross between your traditional tank and a pod. More times than not a pod tank willĀ have a magnetic or snap in proprietary connection.Ā These are not 510 threaded tanks so they will not fit on a regular mod device.

Pod tanks and tanks are vastly similar but if your tank detaches from a 510 threaded base, we would classify that as aĀ regular tank.Ā

All About Pod Device Systems

Draw Activated vs. Button Activated

Let us take a break now from the nitty gritty and cleanse our palette with some more straightforward concepts to grasp. Draw activated versus button activated is as it says; some devices will be activated by pushing a button, and others will allow you to simply inhale to activate the atomizer. Sometimes a pod device will have BOTH a button and the option for draw activation; however, you will likely get a snappier, usually higher wattage vape when pressing the button.Ā

Airflow

The last major thing to talk about is airflow. There are no specific airflow requirements that a pod device must achieve to be classified as a pod device. Pod devices often have adjustable airflow allowing you to dial in your exact airflow specifications. However, it is not uncommon to find a pod device with no adjustable airflow, so again, check the Features & Specifications section to ensure your future pod device fits your expectations.Ā

Benefits

Portability

Hopefully, now we have a better grasp of what makes a pod device a pod device. While everyone has their vaping preferences, the pod market has done its best to bridge the gap between low & high-wattage vapers both having a portable option.

That brings us to the first significant benefit of using pod devices, portability without sacrificing performance! Many of us are used to carrying around massive 150W+ mods, RDAs/RTAs, and a large bottle of juice, but long gone are the days of leaky drippers and heavy mods! You can now find ultra-portable devices that satisfies your nicotine craving with pod devices!

Ease of Use

The next major factor in deciding on a pod device is overall general ease of use. When comparing pod devices to other options on the market, pod devices are far easier to operate & maintain. No rebuilding or re-wicking, just pop in a pod and you're off to the races. But even if you would classify yourself as a hobbyist vaper with no problem rebuilding, pod vapes can still be a great addition to your quiver.Ā

Affordability

Affordability is at the forefront of all our minds. Great news for pod device fans as, for the most part, pod devices and pod kits are more reasonably priced in comparison to large kits, mods, and rebuildables.

While the upfront cost may be much cheaper than buying a 200W mod and RDA, whatĀ willĀ be more expensive is the cost of purchasing replacement coils & pods in the long run. Since you can supply your own cotton and build your own coils with an RDA/RTA, it is commonly accepted that you will save more money in time with a rebuildable atomizer. However, as we have discussed, pod devices are cheaper up front and have portability & ease of use on their side.Ā

Discreet

The most obvious benefit to using pod devices is the discreet design and form factor, allowing you to vape almost anywhere. While vaping is still looked down upon and we are unable to vape indoors, pod devices make it extra simple for you to sneak a quick toot in the bathroom, at the dinner table, or on the bus! While we don't condone blowing billowing clouds indoors, I think we have all snuck a ninja hit where we probably shouldn't have - and pod devices make that EXTRA easy!

Less Consumption

Finally, we can get into the differences between pod devices and mods as far as user experience is concerned. Pod devices will generally require a higher nicotine content due to the lower wattage. For instance, if you usually vape a 3mg freebase juice in a tank, then we recommend changing your juice to a 20mg salt nicotine juice ORĀ raising your freebase nicotine level to 6mg when vaping a pod device. Due to the lower wattage, pod devices inherently don't hit like mods and may require more nicotine, BUT our theory is you end up hitting your vape LESS as a result.Ā

MoreĀ Efficient

While we are on the topic of consumption and juice, we might as well talk about efficiency. As we just stated, it may behoove you to up your nicotine intake when switching to a pod device. It is an assumption, but we think having more nicotine in your device will lead to vaping less, which in turn uses less juice. This is why most salt juice bottles come in a 30ml rather than a 100ml; it takes less juice to get the job done if there is a higher nicotine content.Ā

Perfect for Smokers Looking to Quit

Yes, pod devices are great for on-the-go use and ninja tokes in the bathroom, but they are also perfect for those looking to ditch cigarettes. A lot of the hobbyist vapers out there forget what it was like to be a beginner, with the vape space being a large and complicated beast. Pod devices are a great entry into the vape scene once disposables start to lose their fun (or buying a disposable a week starts to break the bank). With little maintenance and ease of use, pod devices are a great stepping stone in one's journey to ditch the stinkies!Ā

Nicotine Salts vs. Freebase Nicotine

When it comes to nicotine, nic salts vs freebase is mostly personal preference with some technical things to look out for. Our general rule of thumb is if the coil/pod is HIGHER than 0.9ohm it should be used with salts, but if the coil/pod is 0.8ohm or LOWERĀ then we recommend freebase. Salt nicotine is relatively new and essentially boils down to salt nicotine absorbs into your bloodstream faster and more efficient in comparison to freebase. Now with all that said, you can absolutely put freebase in a pod that is 0.9ohms or higher, but we wouldn'tĀ recommend putting salt in anything less than 0.6ohms. Filling up a really sub-ohm coil with salts is a recipe for disaster so be sure you check the resistance of your coils/pods before making any juice decisions!Ā

Disadvantages

Power

After raving about pod devices and all their benefits it's important to discuss their downsides as well. As previously stated, power is the key differentiator between pod devices and mods aside from portability. Most pod devices will live in the 10W-30W range and most pod mods will live in the 35W-100W range. Keep this in mind when selecting your next vape!

Vapor Production

Along with power comes vapor production, or lack thereof. With pod devices and their lower wattage, inherently, you will produce less vapor. Some folks are after huge plumes & cloud comp level of vapor, but for the most part, pod devices won't chuck large clouds.Ā

Long-Term Cost

We briefly discussed long-term cost, which is a significant factor when determining what device to get. Due to the need for constant replacement of pods and coils, the long-term cost of owning a pod device as your ADV will be more significant than if your ADV were an RDA/RTA. You can buy mass amounts of cotton and rebuildable coils for RDAs/RTAs, and yes, they may be more expensive up front, but it will save you in replacement costs in the long run.Ā

FAQ's

Who are pod systems for?

Pod systems are for anyone! They are a great beginner device due to the minimal maintenance and upkeep as well as a great travel option for those more seasoned veterans.Ā

What price can I expect to pay for a pod device?

As mentioned previously, pod devices and kits are wildly affordable! The low cost of entry means anyone can get a pod device to try. The bigger factor comes with the constant purchasing of replacement parts. If a pod device is your ADV, you will be forced to shell out money every week for a new coilĀ which can add up fast.Ā

What is the difference between a pod device & a starter vape kit?

This one can be tricky. ALL pod devices are starter vape kits, but NOT all starter vape kits are pod devices. There are vape kits out there that feature a 150W mod, large tank, and dual 18650 batteries - this too can be a starter kit BUT NOT a pod device.Ā

What PG/VG ratio is best to use in pod devices?

Great question! If you are using a traditional pod device, often a 50/50 ratio is best. More times than not, salt nicotine will be used with traditional pod devices and they are most commonly found at 50/50. VG is thicker than PG, so the more VG there is, the harder your atomizer has to work to vape it. Pods tend to do best with a thinner juice, so try and stick around the 50/50 or 60/40 range. Pod mods are different however. Since you are vaping at upwards of 80W+, freebase juice is what will most likely be used. In this scenario, a 70/30 or even an 80/20 should wick fine.Ā

vg vs pg

Can I use nicotine free liquid?

Yes! Nicotine-Free liquid, TFN, & Synthetic Nicotine are all pretty new on the scene but the chemical compound of the nicotine does NOT play a factor on any pod device.Ā

Are Juul & It's Alternatives Considered a Pod Vape?

For sure! Juul, Vuse, and others would be considered a closed pod system or a pre-filled pod. While you can still purchase these, flavor options are limited to just Menthol & Tobacco.Ā

How do I avoid dry hits?

Another great question! If you have an integrated pod, it is best to fill up your pod and let it sit for AT LEAST 10 minutes prior to taking the first drag. This is so the coil has time to absorb the liquid, but if you just cant wait we have a solution. Fill up your pod like normal, and then place your fingers over all the airflow holes on the pod itself. Now suck in through the pod and hopefully you start to see bubbles. This is aiding in the capillary action and siphoning the juice up through the coil.Ā

If you have a pod system that takes independent coils however, your process is a little easier. Simply take the coil and start to dot juice inside the coil and in the cotton windows. Make sure not to overdue it, but by adding juice to the coil you are shortening the time it takes the coil to suck up the juice on its own.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
